Instead of telling the same story each year, that does not involve critical thinking skills, try a new activity that will expand children's minds. If you need ideas, you should take a look at this blog.
One activity I personally liked was one similar to the game "Who Wants to be a Millionaire"
This game not only challenges the students, but it also makes it rewarding for the students. Each question the student gets correct they move up a step and gain more pseudo money, but when they get a question wrong it tells you the correct answer and you must start over at 0. This game is called From Rags to Riches. I personally really enjoyed this activity and ended up winning the $1,000,000!
