Why We Study History

Chapter 11
How Do I Engage Students in Examining History?

 Objective 2:
Identify four goals or purposes for the study of history.

In the U.S., "History helps to prepare students for responsible citizenship, further learning, and productive employment in our modern economy."

1. Socialization is a process where a student begins to accept and support his or her culture.
2. Countersocialization forces people to examine their personal and social beliefs and analyze the problems of their nation and world.
3.Learning about the origins of the nation and its struggles to grow physically, politically, and economically.
4. Prepare students to become citizens.
